Archetypes from Polish roads

05-01-2012

During the construction of new roads, real treasures are being found. The most interesting findings presented at the exhibition include a silver kaptorga (amulet container) from the 10th/11th century, a necklace in the form of a crown from the 1st century, an iron umbo from the 1st century b.c., a miniature cart decorated with motifs of the sun and birds from the 500 b.c. as well as numerous swords and various types of jewelry.

When constructing new sections of fast highways, the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways not only contributes to the improvement of the quality of traveling but also bears in mind the cultural heritage. It is very important as the source of cultural identity and connections to a certain place or region. By discovering and exploring the heritage of the distant past, archeologists protect it from destruction and oblivion. Thus, the artifacts excavated during works carried out prior to the commencement of the construction of roads are important to an archeologist due to their individual artistic or material value and, most of all, due to their cultural context which is the co-occurrence and location in cultural layers. The methods of saving the archeological heritage comprise, among others, the excavation works.

An exhibition entitled “Arche(o)typy” was launched on 4th January in the Złote Tarasy shopping center in Warsaw. It is organized by the National Heritage Board of Poland in cooperation with the Poznań Archeological Museum.

The exhibition presents ancient objects, contemporary jewelry and everyday use objects found during excavations prior to the commencement of the construction of new transportation routes such as motorways, expressways and ring roads. An interesting presentation of relics of the past from before nearly several thousand years and modern objects draws attention of the recipients and make them realize the extent of inspiration and ideas contemporary artists and designers derive from our cultural heritage. The presented photos take us back to the most ancient times, at the same time, revealing the importance and impact of archeological and cultural heritage on our everyday life.

The exhibition also presents an unprecedented Europe-wide conservation program of archeological rescue explorations. Archeological works aimed at protecting objects exposed to destruction during construction are carried out since 1996 in places where national roads and motorways are being built. Owing to archeological operations, it is possible to discover the past which is the basis of our identity. The exhibition is the result of works conducted on the area of 1000 hectares, where 2500 archeological sites, 2250 settlements and 200 cemeteries were explored.

The General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways, National Heritage Board, Poznań Archeological Museum and the Złote Tarasy shopping center invite to the “Arche(o)typy” exhibition.

The exhibition can be viewed on 3-15 January 2012 during the opening hours of the Złote Tarasy shopping center. Admission to the exhibition is free.
